Naomi has been candid about the difficulties of pregnancy and early motherhood. In a December 2023 interview with InStyle, she shared how the experience was more challenging than she initially expected. “Going into it, you kind of think: Oh, it’s this beautiful journey. But it’s kind of rough,” she said.
She described morning sickness, weight gain, and the loneliness she felt during the journey. Her anxiety was heightened when she tested positive for Group B streptococcus, a bacterial infection that can be dangerous for newborns.

As her due date approached, Naomi found herself worrying more about her health and that of her unborn child. These fears were compounded by the death of U.S. Olympic track star Tori Bowie, who passed away due to pregnancy complications.
Tori’s death from eclampsia, a serious condition related to high blood pressure, occurred just months before Naomi gave birth. “I was kind of starting to freak out a little bit,” Naomi admitted, sharing how the news intensified her concerns.

Despite these challenges, Naomi embraced motherhood with determination. She spent the first weeks of motherhood worrying whether she would be a good enough mom. But over time, she found strength in the idea that “moms are superheroes, but they’re also people.”
Naomi’s realization made her reflect on her own mother, Tamaki Osaka, who raised her and her sister while working tirelessly to support the family after they moved from Japan to the U.S.

Tamaki often worked overtime in the import and export industry in New York, sometimes even sleeping in her car. Reflecting on her mother’s sacrifices, Naomi shared, “Growing up, I’ve always seen her being so independent and so strong, but now that I’m thinking about it, she must have been really worried all the time.”

She admitted that she practiced tennis so intensely as a child because she wanted to ease her mother’s burden. “I just can’t imagine how stressful it was,” she said. “She was the type that did everything for me and my sister. I feel like, in that way, she sort of lost, like: What does she like to do? And what does she want to do in the future?”
Naomi announced her pregnancy in January 2023, during a break from professional tennis. In her announcement, she reflected on the challenges and lessons she had faced while away from the sport.
She also expressed excitement about the future, imagining her child one day watching her play and proudly saying, “That’s my mom.” Naomi hinted at her return to tennis, stating her intention to compete in the 2024 Australian Open.

In July 2023, Naomi shared her baby’s first photo on Twitter, though she kept the child’s face hidden. The baby was dressed in a white onesie adorned with tennis racquets and balls.
Alongside the photo, Naomi playfully captioned, “Well that was a cool little intermission, now back to your regularly scheduled program 🎾✌🏾💕,” signaling her return to the tennis world after her brief hiatus.
As Naomi Osaka continues her journey in tennis, she remains open about the challenges of motherhood and is focused on balancing her new role as a mother with her ambitions on the court.
